Origins within the Teamsters Movement
General Teamsters Local Union No. 979 is rooted in the broader Teamsters movement, one of North America’s most influential labour organizations. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT), founded in 1903, grew from representing transportation and delivery workers into a diverse union spanning aviation, warehousing, logistics, security, and service industries. In Canada, Teamsters representation has existed for decades, with Teamsters Canada formally established in 1976 and now supporting more than 125,000 workers across key sectors.
Within this national and international structure, Local 979 developed as a Prairie-based local union serving Manitoba and surrounding regions. As the economy evolved, the Local expanded its representation across transportation, aviation support services, courier operations, and other industrial and federally regulated workplaces.
Today, General Teamsters Local Union No. 979 continues to represent members across Manitoba and the Prairie provinces, focusing on collective bargaining, organizing, labour representation, and the ongoing advancement of fair and equitable workplace standards.
Who We Help
The Teamsters Union also performs vital work in areas such as pension management, safety and health, community outreach, governmental affairs, and communications. For more than a century, the Teamsters have been a strong public voice for the rights and aspirations of working men and women and a key force in advancing and protecting those rights.
Unions have been setting the standard for fair wages and workplace protections for both members and non-members for decades. This role is especially important as wage discrimination continues to affect workers across the country. The gender pay gap persists, with women often earning less than men for the same work, and racialized and Indigenous workers continue to face lower average earnings than non-racialized and non-Indigenous Canadians. Strong unions help raise standards, promote equity, and ensure more fair and consistent compensation across industries.
